This 1860 Victorian stick stand is cast in iron with a reddish-brown painted finish and an antique chestnut shade. The design depicts the infant Hercules strangling a serpent among detailed foliage leaves, incorporating an integrated drip tray at the base with a textured leaf pattern and a raised outer moulding. The figural sculpture shows the young child standing barefoot amidst raised grasses, holding the writhing snake overhead while another coil wraps around his waist and legs. Measuring 82 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, the piece functions as an umbrella and walking stick holder. Positioned beside the front door in an entrance hallway, the stand serves as a practical accessory for everyday use while providing a decorative focal point with its classical mythological narrative. The heavy iron construction ensures stability when supporting wet umbrellas and heavy walking canes. The traditional finish and sculptural depth complement period interiors and entranceways, offering a functional piece of Victorian hall furniture.

Victorian cast iron stick stands were developed in the nineteenth century to store walking canes and wet umbrellas in domestic entryways. Foundries such as Coalbrookdale popularised elaborate figural and botanical castings, combining utilitarian drainage trays with classical and mythological themes.

These pieces were crafted using sand-casting techniques, where molten iron was poured into intricate sand moulds. Once cooled, the cast sections were hand-finished, fitted together with threaded rods or screws, and finished with paint or patination to protect against moisture.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces often feature crisp casting detail, substantial weight, and stamped foundry marks or diamond registration marks on the reverse or underside. Reproduction pieces typically exhibit rougher casting seams, blurred detail, and modern hex bolts.

Place the stand near an entryway or in a hallway to serve as both functional storage and a sculptural focal point. Combining heavy cast metalwork with clean modern architectural lines or traditional timber panelling creates visual contrast.

Keep the metal dry by emptying and wiping any accumulated moisture from the base tray. Clean dust from intricate relief work using a soft-bristled brush, and apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax periodically to guard against surface oxidisation.
