This Victorian cast iron stick stand takes the form of a young boy holding a serpent amidst foliate decoration. The piece displays a dark grey finish with areas of rust-coloured oxidation visible on the integrated drip tray and textured base. Cast iron comprises the material throughout, showing structural detail including the figure's curly hair, a strap across his torso, and the scaly coils of the snake looped across his hands. The heavy-duty structure measures 83 cm tall, 44 cm wide, and 25 cm deep at the base. Positioned beside a front door in a hallway or porch, the stand serves a practical function for holding walking sticks and umbrellas. The sturdy construction handles daily domestic use while providing a decorative feature with nineteenth-century character. The removable drip tray catches water and debris from wet walking accessories, protecting interior flooring surfaces. The heavy metal composition ensures stability when loaded with multiple items.

Popularised in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these hallway items combined utility with classical mythology and floral motifs, frequently manufactured by prominent iron foundries.

Victorian stick stands were predominantly manufactured from molten pig iron poured into sand moulds, resulting in heavy, detailed castings with integrated drip trays.

Authentic period pieces feature sharp casting details, substantial physical weight, diamond registration marks or foundry numbers, and natural surface patination rather than modern seam lines.

Positioned in an entryway, porch, or hallway, these functional metalwork pieces provide structural texture against light walls while serving as practical storage for umbrellas and walking sticks.

Remove loose dirt with a soft dry brush, apply a light layer of microcrystalline wax to guard against surface oxidisation, and ensure the drip tray remains free of standing water.
