This Victorian 1880s side table is constructed from burr oak and oak in a warm brown shade with a polished finish. The rectangular top has rounded corners, supported by double turned columns above splayed scroll feet and a central stretcher with a turned finial and Greek key carving. The timber displays rich natural grain patterns across the top surface, along with detailed turned mouldings on the structural supports. Measuring 73 cm high, 106 cm wide and 53 cm deep, the table fits naturally at the end of a sofa or against a hallway wall in an English Country House interior. The piece provides a functional surface for a lamp or decorative objects while adding period character to a living space.

FAQs

Late Victorian side tables from the 1880s frequently featured turned twin-column supports, central stretcher bases, and revival motifs such as incised Greek key patterns and scroll feet.

Craftsmen utilised solid oak and highly figured burr oak veneers, employing traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved decorative detailing.

Authentic period pieces display natural variation in the wood grain figure, aged patination on the finish, hand-cut joinery underneath, and original brass castors.

Placing the table beside a sofa, in a hallway, or within a reading alcove creates a functional accent that provides historical contrast against modern upholstered seating.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically, keeping the timber clear of direct sunlight and radiator heat sources.
