FAQs

A jigger doll is a traditional folk toy featuring articulated limbs designed to dance or jig on a paddle or board when tapped. Originating in the 19th century, these handmade mechanical toys were popular forms of home entertainment in rural communities.

These dolls were typically hand-carved from local hardwoods such as pine, boxwood, or fruitwood, often featuring wire or peg joints to allow for loose, flexible movement. Clothing was usually fashioned from scraps of contemporary textiles, wool, or cotton.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina, genuine wear from handling, hand-carved tool marks, and period-appropriate textiles. Age-related oxidisation on the wood and handmade metal pins rather than modern fasteners are key indicators of authenticity.

Display the doll on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or inside a glass cabinet to highlight its sculptural qualities and historical charm. Pairing folk art objects with minimalist or rustic decor creates a striking, curated aesthetic.

Keep wooden artefacts away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent cracking and fading. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid using chemical cleaning agents on historic surfaces or textiles.
