This nineteenth-century occasional table belongs to the Biedermeier style and dates to approximately 1890. Constructed from birch with a tiger birch veneer on the circular top, the timber exhibits a rich golden honey-brown colour with varied grain patterns and very minor surface marks. The top features a tilt-top mechanism locked into place by a peg, supported by a turned central stem that leads down to three cabriole legs terminating in carved paw feet. Measuring 69.2 cm high, 76.2 cm wide, and 76.2 cm deep, it is practical for everyday use around the home. In a modern interior, the table suits placement in an empty corner as an accent piece, or beside a chair in a living room or study to hold lamps, books, or drinks. Its compact circular surface and sturdy tripod base make it versatile for multiple uses in traditional or contemporary English country house settings where flexible occasional furniture is required.

Tilt-top tripod tables developed in the 18th century and remained popular throughout the 19th century as flexible living arrangements expanded in European homes. Designed with a catch mechanism, the tabletop tilts vertically so the piece can be stored flush against a wall when not required for serving tea, writing, or display.

These tables were commonly crafted from hardwoods such as birch, mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with natural oil or shellac polishes. Construction typically involved hand-turned central pillars, hand-dovetailed or pegged block mechanisms beneath the top, and tripod legs joined via wooden dowels or hand-cut mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic 19th-century examples display evidence of hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular or hand-cut screws, and naturally aged brass catch mechanisms underneath the top. Examination of the underside often reveals shrinkage, tool marks, and age-appropriate patination surrounding the turned pedestal block and leg joints.

A birch tilt-top table serves as a functional side table alongside contemporary upholstered sofas or armchairs, adding warmth through its natural timber tone. When tilted vertically, it functions as a decorative architectural element in an empty corner or alcove, highlighting the grain of the circular top.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or colour fading. Periodical applications of a natural beeswax polish applied with a soft cloth will preserve the patina and protect the surface from moisture.
