This Japanese Arita bowl comes from the Edo period and dates to around 1700. Formed from white porcelain finished with a glossy glaze, the piece features hand-painted cobalt blue underglaze patterns and bright orange overglaze enamel. The interior showcases a central medallion depicting floral motifs including chrysanthemum and peony, surrounded by a repeating decorative rim border in blue and orange. Visible signs of age include slight surface wear to the painted enamels and minor fading along the inner rim lines. Measuring 8 cm high and 16 cm wide, the vessel sits comfortably on a sideboard top or display shelf within a living room or dining space. It functions well as a decorative table centrepiece or as an accent bowl for holding small items, bringing traditional East Asian craftsmanship into contemporary interiors.

Arita porcelain refers to Japanese ceramic wares crafted in and around the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture, originating in the early seventeenth century after kaolin clay deposits were discovered in the region.

Traditional Arita porcelain is made from fine kaolin clay fired at elevated temperatures to create a dense porcelain body, embellished with underglaze cobalt blue paint and subsequent overglaze enamel pigments.

Authentic pieces feature hand-painted brushwork variations, firing imperfections such as small iron spots or kiln spur marks on the base, and period-appropriate glaze depth.

Place the bowl as a focal accent on a sideboard top, coffee table, or open bookshelf to introduce traditional pattern and color contrast against modern textures.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads, chemical cleaners, or automated dishwashers that could wear away delicate overglaze enamels.
