This Victorian gentleman's walking stick sword stick dates from 1890 and originates from Polynesia. Constructed from dark brown hardwood and steel with a brass ferrule, the piece comprises a tapered wooden shaft and a separate inner section with a tensioned steel blade and a textured root knop handle. The dark wood shaft has a brass ring moulding at the lower terminal, while the textured handle features a natural bulbous root formation at the top. The entire item measures 90 cm high by 4 cm wide and 2 cm deep, with the blade section spanning 86 cm from the steel tip to the top of the handle. Suitable for display in a study or library as part of a collection of walking sticks.

A sword stick, or sword cane, is a walking cane containing a concealed blade, popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a discreet self-defence weapon for gentlemen.

They typically feature a hollowed wooden or bamboo shaft, a forged steel blade, a brass ferrule at the base, and a carved wood, horn, or bone handle.

Authentic historical pieces generally exhibit natural age-consistent wear, a functional friction fit or spring release mechanism, hand-forged steel with light oxidisation, and fitted metal collar ferrules.

These historical items are frequently displayed within a hall stand in an entryway, mounted on a wall bracket, or placed in a glass display cabinet alongside other curiosities.

Nourish the outer wooden shaft with natural beeswax, keep the steel blade lightly oiled with mineral oil to prevent corrosion, and store in a temperature-controlled environment to avoid wood warping.
