This Victorian inkstand takes the form of an ornate brass desk set dating from 1880 in an Art Nouveau style. The piece presents in a warm brass colour with a polished finish, incorporating two covered inkwells with pointed finials and lift-up lids that open to reveal two glass removable ink wells. Below the wells sits an integrated front pen tray, complemented by a pierced Art Nouveau botanical backplate featuring whiplash curves. Practical dimensions measure 10 cm high, 23.5 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a gentleman's library table or office desk, the inkstand functions as a desktop accessory for organizing writing implements and storing ink. The traditional design accommodates modern stationery needs while serving as a decorative focal point in a study or home workspace.

FAQs

An antique brass double inkstand is a desktop writing companion engineered to hold two inkwells alongside a tray for dip pens. Popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these items served both practical writing functions and decorative purposes in offices and libraries.

Victorian brass desk sets were typically produced using sand casting or die-stamped sheet brass, which was then hand-chased and polished. The inkwells often contained glass or ceramic liners to prevent acidic ink from corroding the metal structure.

Authentic pieces generally display period-specific design traits, such as stylized botanical scrollwork or symmetrical casting typical of late Victorian and Art Nouveau styles. Inspect the underside for foundry marks, maker stamps, registration numbers, or natural wear consistent with historical use.

A brass inkstand functions effectively as a stylized accent piece on a modern home office desk, console table, or library shelf. It can be paired with bound books, leather desk blotters, or contemporary stationery to create a balanced mix of traditional metalwork and modern decor.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners that can strip original lacquers or patination. If desired, a mild brass polish applied sparingly with a soft cloth will restore shine, though preserving minor natural oxidisation is often preferred to maintain original historical character.
