Description

A large and impressive set of antique mahogany and leather library steps in the Georgian style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1930’s period.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, and the steps have inset black leather surfaces.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

The pole that stands above the steps can be unscrewed and lifted out, so this breaks down into a smaller size for ease of transport.

Library steps gained popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras when private home libraries expanded vertically, requiring specialized furniture to safely reach high bookshelves.

Traditional library steps were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, frequently featuring leather-insets on the treads to provide grip and reduce noise.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods, timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate hand tools marks, and natural wear to the wood and leather surfaces consistent with age.

They can be positioned beside tall bookshelves or used as standalone display tiers for plants and decorative objects, adding architectural height and historical character to a room.

Maintenance requires occasional application of microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber and treating inset leather with specialized leather conditioners while avoiding direct sunlight.
