Allen of York, a highly respected taxidermist, capable of producing some outstanding work. This being an exceptional example, and illustrates perfectly just how good those Victorian taxidermists could be. Its cases like this that have kept me so enthralled for so many years.

FAQs

Victorian taxidermy gained immense popularity in Great Britain during the 19th century, driven by a Victorian fascination with natural history, ornithology, and the collection of exotic species for domestic display in parlours and studies.

These pieces typically feature a hand-blown convex or oval glass dome seated on a turned wooden base, housing a naturalistic diorama constructed from dried moss, twigs, painted backdrops, and arsenical soaps used to preserve the bird specimens.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-specific taxidermy techniques such as wire and tow bodies, hand-painted background scenery, maker labels pasted to the base, and old glass with characteristic imperfections, bubbles, and waviness.

Antique taxidermy works well as a focal point in a study or library, paired with dark wood furniture, brass accents, and curiosities to create an eclectic cabinet of curiosities aesthetic.

Keep domes out of direct sunlight to prevent feather fading, maintain stable humidity levels to avoid pest damage, and clean the exterior glass gently without removing the original sealed tape on the base.
