Ebonising wood and incorporating iridescent nacre inlay gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, heavily influenced by Japanese and continental decorative arts introduced at international exhibitions.

These pieces typically utilized hardwoods such as beech or birch, which were stained or painted black to imitate ebony, paired with genuine iridescent mother-of-pearl shell and hand-applied gilt detailing.

Authentic pieces from c.1860 feature hand-cut shell fragments with distinct iridescence, traditional joinery methods, hand-painted gilt highlights, and natural age-related crazing or patination on the lacquered surfaces.

An ornate dark pedestal table provides a striking focal point in minimalist or eclectic spaces, functioning effectively as an accent piece next to neutral seating or as a standalone display surface.

Preserve the finish by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and moisture, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding chemical polishes that can damage the delicate lacquer and gilt work.
