Enamel advertising signs, also known as porcelain enamel signs, became widely popular from the late 19th century through to the mid-20th century. Companies used them for outdoor advertising because the fused glass-on-metal construction provided a durable, weather-resistant finish that maintained vibrant colours.

These signs were manufactured by fusing powdered glass to a sheet metal base, usually iron or steel, at high temperatures in a kiln. This process created a hard, glossy surface that resisted fading, corrosion, and weathering.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related characteristics such as porcelain chipping around mounting holes, minor rust oxidation on exposed edges, weight from the heavy metal substrate, and multi-layered screen-printed or stencilled typography typical of historical manufacturing methods.

An antique sign can be mounted directly onto a bare brick wall or neutral plaster surface as a focal point in an industrial, rustic, or eclectic interior. Keeping the surrounding decor minimal allows the historical textures and typography to stand out.

Preservation involves gently dusting the surface with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally washing with mild soapy water if dirt accumulates. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh scrubbing, or chemical solvents that could damage the vitreous enamel or worsen existing corrosion on the metal edges.
