Description

An impressive and rare German porcelain group produced by Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur, Schwarzburger Werkstätten, Thuringia, circa 1920. Modelled by Hugo Meisel, chief artist and principal designer at Volkstedt, this finely detailed group depicts a standing rococo couple in a gentle embrace, accompanied by a Moorish page boy presenting a cushion with a casket of golden bonbons—a classic symbol of luxury and aristocratic celebration. This original artist-designed figure was created in the elite artistic division of Volkstedt and is not a mass-produced piece. The underglaze blue crowned monogram is placed on the side of the base, as typical for Schwarzburger Werkstätten. The sculptor’s raised signature H. Meisel is also present on the side, confirming authenticity.

A blue cartouche with three golden stars is featured on the base—a decorative motif derived from the historic coat of arms of the Schwarzburg principality, where the Volkstedt manufactory was located. This emblem was typically reserved for large and prestigious sculptural groups, serving as a mark of the manufactory’s “luxury line” or “collector’s edition,” and underscoring the aristocratic heritage and artistic status of the piece

Condition: Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor darkening to the back of the page boy’s coat, likely from professional retouching, not visible from the front. No repairs to hands or faces.

Dimensions: Height 29 cm, width 28 cm, depth 17 cm. Weight 1992 g

Volkstedt is one of the oldest porcelain manufactories in Thuringia, Germany, established in the 18th century, renowned for producing finely modelled and hand-painted figures.

These pieces are crafted from hard-paste porcelain, meticulously hand-modelled, glazed, and decorated with polychrome enamels often accented with hand-applied gilding.

Authentic pieces typically feature manufacturer backstamps, impressed model numbers, artist signatures, and show fine details in moulding and hand-painting characteristic of the period.

Position the piece as a focal point on a secure surface such as a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or enclosed glass cabinet, allowing its intricate details and colour palette to contrast against neutral surroundings.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and clean only when necessary using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals and abrasive cloths to protect the glaze and gilding.
