Description

DESCRIPTION

A striking large-scale French needlepoint wool tapestry, woven in the style of the famed medieval series The Lady and the Unicorn. This example likely dates from the early 20th century (circa 1920) and replicates the iconography and composition of the original “Taste” panel, housed in the Musée de Cluny, Paris. Set against a millefleurs background in deep crimson, the scene features a noble lady flanked by a lion and a unicorn, with trees, animals, and birds woven throughout. The tapestry is mounted on a linen backing for stability and ease of hanging, with brass hanging rings sewn into the top (note there are more hanging points than photographed). Handwritten label verso.

The original Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are a famous set of six late-medieval allegories woven in Flanders from wool and silk, now housed in the Musee de Cluny in Paris. Later reproductions and interpretations draw upon this iconic millefleurs aesthetic, which symbolised the senses and courtly love.

Traditional European tapestries were primarily hand-woven using wool and silk yarns on vertical warp looms, often incorporating metallic threads such as gold or silver. Needlepoint versions involve stitching wool yarn through a stiff canvas mesh to replicate the pictorial depth of woven counterparts.

Authentication involves examining the fibre composition, natural dye variations, backing materials, and hand-stitched construction methods. Signs of genuine age include uniform fibre wear, oxidisation of underlying threads, and hand-spun wool characteristics consistent with historical production eras.

A large tapestry serves as a dramatic focal point, softening architectural lines and adding texture to minimalist or contemporary rooms. Hanging it from a decorative brass or iron rod distributes the weight evenly and elevates the overall display.

Antique textiles should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and an ultraviolet protective glaze on framing glass or windows is recommended. Regular, gentle vacuuming with a low-suction attachment through a mesh screen helps remove surface dust without damaging the fibres.
