This freestanding 19th-century Victorian Gothic Revival dinner gong comes in a medium brown oak timber with a polished finish, complemented by a round brass gong suspended by cord and accompanied by a hanging striker. The arched crest features detailed acanthus leaf carvings flanked by urn-shaped turned finials, resting upon upright turned posts with floral rosettes. A lower turned stretcher with central acanthus decoration bridges the uprights, while the entire frame is elevated on ornate scroll feet. Measuring 102 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, this practical piece functions well for adding character to an empty corner in a hallway, dining room, or traditional English country house interior. The tactile timber grain, visible surface wear, and heavy brass plate contribute to an authentic period aesthetic suited for daily decorative display or ceremonial use in a home.

FAQs

In nineteenth and early twentieth-century households, dinner gongs were used to signal mealtimes to family members and staff across large residences.

These items typically feature carved hardwood frames, such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, supporting a suspended circular gong made of hand-hammered brass or bronze.

Authentic period examples display detailed hand-carved joinery, natural wear to the timber finish, and a rich patina or hammer marks on the metal disc.

A standing dinner gong functions well as a decorative focal point placed in a hallway, dining room corner, or adjacent to a sideboard.

Regular light dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of beeswax will preserve the timber, while the brass plate should be kept dry to retain its original surface patina.
