This 19th Century Victorian Rococo Revival centre table is made from dark brown rosewood. The piece has a serpentine top with a moulded edge, sitting above a carved frieze decorated with floral and shell motifs. The base consists of ornate, profusely carved C-scroll legs in cabriole curves, united by a carved central stretcher that is adorned with foliage and terminates in scroll feet. The wood exhibits a warm timber grain and visible surface wear consistent with age. Measuring 78 cm high, 138 cm wide, and 77 cm deep, the table stands at a practical size for everyday use. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a striking freestanding centrepiece in a living room, hallway, or study. It provides a generous surface for displaying decorative items, lamps, or books while anchoring the room with its sculptural Victorian silhouette.

Centre tables became prominent features in 19th-century homes, placed in the middle of drawing rooms or entry halls to showcase status and craftsmanship. During the Victorian era, cabinetmakers frequently adopted Rococo Revival influences, characterised by sweeping serpentine curves, C-scrolls, and elaborate botanical carvings.

These tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, often utilizing rosewood veneers over oak or pine cores for expansive tops. Construction techniques relied on hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-carved decorative elements.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural grain variations distinct to rosewood, aged dark patina, and signs of hand-tooling on the underside or structural framework. Look for original castors beneath the scroll feet, hand-carved symmetry errors, and evidence of historical oxidation in the wood drawers or frame.

An antique centre table functions effectively as a focal point in a formal entryway or hallway, topped with contemporary ceramics or a floral arrangement. It can also serve as an accent or sofa table in a modern living room to introduce textural contrast against minimalist upholstery.

Maintain rosewood by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture sources to prevent the wood veneer from drying, fading, or lifting.
