Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This monumental Victorian floor-standing balance scale originates from around 1900. Fashioned entirely from brass with a warm gold-coloured finish, the piece features a prominent bull's-head finial atop a turned central column, a horizontal pivoting beam, and two circular brass pans suspended by delicate chain supports. The heavy platform base contains fourteen graduated compartments designed to hold weights. Measuring 155 cm high, 117 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, the substantial proportions require a dedicated focal point. Position this striking decorative object in an empty corner of a home library, study, or hallway as a dramatic statement piece. The traditional shopkeeper design adds industrial character and historical interest to contemporary interiors without needing further embellishment. The gleaming metal surfaces catch natural light, creating a commanding presence that complements both period and modern settings.

FAQs

Floor-standing brass balance scales were used throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in commercial settings, such as butcher shops, markets, and grocers, to weigh large quantities of produce and meat.

These scales are typically constructed from heavy cast brass, turned brass columns, and iron internal counterweights or base supports to ensure stability and accuracy during heavy trade use.

Authentic trade scales often feature stamped verification marks, weights and measures stamps on the beam or pans, heavy solid brass construction, and crisp casting details such as decorative finials.

A large brass balance scale functions as a dramatic focal point in an entryway, dining area, or conservatory corner, where the suspended pans can be left empty or styled with botanical displays.

Regular dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth is recommended. To maintain the metal finish without stripping natural aging, use a specialized brass polish sparingly and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners.
