Description

A great looking antique William IV mahogany leather top writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from between 1830-1837.

It was made by the company of renowned cabinet maker Thomas Willson. It is stamped M. Willson inside the drawer, as the company was run by his widow Mary Willson and Son between 1830-1837.

It is of superb quality, with bold turned and fluted legs, original brass casters and nicely turned mahogany handles. There is one central drawer, stamped with the makers mark, flanked by two dummy drawers. This has a gorgeous faded green inset leather top writing surface, with gold tooled edges.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

William IV furniture, produced roughly between 1830 and 1837, bridges the Regency and early Victorian periods, characterised by heavy, robust proportions, classical Revival motifs, and dark native or imported timbers.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, dovetail-jointed drawers, and turned or fluted legs often fitted with brass castors.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, genuine patina on the leather insert, and original brass hardware without modern screw types.

This piece functions effectively as a focal point in a home office or living space, contrasting sharply against minimalist white walls or complementing rich, dark accent colours alongside contemporary seating.

Maintain the timber using high-quality beeswax applied sparingly, protect the leather surface with specialised neutral leather cream, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating vents to prevent wood splitting.
