A moonflask, or bianhu, is a flattened spherical ceramic vessel inspired by nomadic leather canteens, gaining significant prominence in Chinese imperial kilns during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

These vessels are crafted from high-fired petuntse and kaolin clay, traditionally decorated with intricate overglaze enamels, such as famille rose or wucai palettes, often set against a sgraffito or brocade ground.

Authentication involves examining the body weight, iron-foot characteristics, underglaze cobalt or enamel vibrance, potting irregularities, and comparing reign marks against known imperial exemplars under magnification.

Placed as a focal point on a credenza, mantelpiece, or open bookshelf, the vibrant colour palette and sculptural symmetry provide an arresting contrast to minimalist or transitional decor schemes.

Keep ceramic items out of direct sunlight to prevent enamel fading, handle with clean, dry hands supporting both the base and body, and dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without using liquid cleaners.
