This 17th-century religious icon depicts Saint George on horseback slaying a dragon, presented in a traditional Orthodox style. The piece uses wood, tempera paint, gold leaf, and iron hardware, showing a gilded halo, a red cloak, and a green dragon figure against a luminous gold leaf background. An original dark brown timber frame surrounds the painted panel, finished with a deeply carved rope border and distressed wear throughout the surface. The frame includes a suspension ring attached to the top edge for hanging. Measuring 18 cm high and 18 cm wide, the small scale makes it suited for display in a narrow wall space or a domestic altar setting in a home today.

Saint George icons depict the Christian martyr famously featured in Eastern Orthodox and Western traditions slaying a dragon, symbolising the triumph of faith over evil. Originating in Byzantine art traditions, these devotional panels were created for personal veneration and church liturgy throughout Eastern Europe.

Traditional icons were executed on solid wood panels, typically using egg tempera paint applied over gesso plaster preparation. Gilding with real gold leaf was frequently applied to halos and backgrounds to represent divine light and eternity.

Authentic early icons exhibit natural age indicators such as craquelure in the paint layer, wood shrinkage, and authentic wear to gilded areas. The reverse of the panel often displays period carving marks, hand-forged hanging hardware, or evidence of original wooden support keys used to prevent warping.

An antique icon serves as a focal point when mounted on a narrow wall or displayed on a mantelpiece within a curated art arrangement. Combining historic gilded artwork with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a sophisticated contrast in tone and texture.

Icons must be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent wood movement and flaking paint. Dusting should be done gently with a soft dry brush without applying liquid cleaners or polishes.
