Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Chinese folding screen belongs to the 1930 period and displays a Chinoiserie style with a maximalist wonderland design vibe. Made from wood finished in black lacquer and pigment, the eight-fold coromandel piece has a dark surface decorated with intricate polychrome scenes. These include carved pavilions, architectural landscapes, and figurative groupings, all enclosed within a patterned decorative border. The surface reveals painted details in pale tones of pink, cream, green, and blue, metallic hinges connecting the eight vertical panels, and raised edges along the top and bottom borders. The piece stands at 214 cm high in practical terms. Placed within a modern home, this screen functions as a striking room divider to zone open spaces, or stands flat against a wall in a living room, hallway, or bedroom to introduce visual texture and narrative decoration.

FAQs

A Coromandel screen is a folding wooden partition finished in multiple layers of dark lacquer that is carved away in low relief to reveal intricate pictorial designs highlighted with painted pigments.

These screens are constructed using wooden core panels covered in a base substrate, sealed with lacquer derived from tree resin, and finished with carved details and mineral-based colour pigments or gold leaf.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved depth with slight irregularities, genuine age-related craquelure in the lacquer surface, and historical joinery techniques along the brass hinges and panel bases.

A large folding screen can be positioned behind a sofa, mounted flat on a wall as a dramatic focal piece, or used to delineate distinct functional areas in an open-plan room.

Keep the screen away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dust gently with a soft dry microfiber cloth, and avoid liquids, solvents, or silicone-based polishes that can degrade the lacquer.
