FAQs

A John Barleycorn chess set is a traditional design characterised by heavily turned, ribbed pieces resembling grains of barley, popular during the 19th century.

These sets were typically carved from bovine bone or ivory, often housed in wooden presentation boxes lined with velvet or marbled paper.

Authentic pieces usually display natural grain lines, yellowing or patina from age, and subtle hand-turned lathe marks rather than uniform modern moulding.

It can be displayed set up on a side table, coffee table, or within a glass cabinet to act as a sculptural focal point in a traditional or eclectic interior.

They should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, handling them with clean hands to prevent skin oils from staining the porous material.
