Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Oak drawer linings with hand-cut dovetails: early cabinet work before machine cutting.
Wooden knuckle hinge on the rear gate leg: early mechanical table construction.
Acanthus carving and ball-and-claw feet: fashionable English mid-eighteenth-century design.
Dark oxidised unfinished timber to the underside: natural aging across centuries.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This George II card table takes the form of an 18th-century piece constructed from rich brown Cuban mahogany with a fold-over top. The solid wood shows natural grain patterns across the rectangular top and single front drawer, which holds an original brass swing handle above a rope-twist moulding. Ornate acanthus carving decorates the knees of the front cabriole legs, terminating in ball-and-claw feet, while the rear legs finish in simple pad feet. Measuring 74 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, the compact proportion suits traditional English country house interiors. Positioned beside the front door, the item serves as a functional side table or console surface in a hallway or living space. The timber surfaces display a polished medium-brown finish throughout the frieze, legs, and top. The hinged gate action operates to support the hinged surface when unfolded for play or display. The design integrates classic period motifs with practical small-scale dimensions suitable for contemporary home placement.

Originating from the mid-18th century during the reign of King George II (17271760), these tables are characterized by dense mahogany timber, elegant cabriole legs often terminating in ball-and-claw feet, and fold-over tops designed for social gaming.

High-grade Cuban mahogany was the predominant timber due to its dense grain and rich colour. Secondary woods like oak or pine were used for drawer linings, complemented by hand-cast brass hardware and baize fabric lining on the interior gaming surface.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved details such as acanthus or shell motifs, hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, authentic patination, and original gate-leg hinged mechanisms designed to support the unfolded leaf.

When closed, these versatile tables function as refined hall consoles or side tables beneath a mirror. Placed behind a sofa or against a entryway wall, they add historical depth while providing subtle storage via the frieze drawer.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and nourish the wood twice a year with a natural beeswax polish. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer cracking.
