FAQs

Late 19th-century French giltwood furniture typically draws inspiration from earlier Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, featuring carved wooden frames coated in gesso and leaf gilding to emulate solid gold luxury.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods like beech or pine, coated with a layer of gesso to create a smooth surface for gold leaf application, and often topped with inset marble or slate.

Authentic period pieces show age through fine craquelure in the gesso, hand-carved detailing with subtle asymmetries, and the natural oxidation of the metal leaf beneath historical layers of dust and patina.

An antique giltwood table works effectively as a contrasting focal point in minimalist or contemporary spaces, pairing well with neutral upholstery and sleek architectural lines to highlight its ornate texture.

Giltwood requires delicate handling; dusting should be done gently with a dry, soft brush, avoiding any liquid cleaners, abrasive cloths, or direct sunlight that could damage the fragile gold leaf and gesso.
