Description

M H Blanchard and Sons 19thC Buff Terracotta Stone Pedestal, Stamped 39cm Sq.

A rare 19th century M H Blanchard square pedestal plinth measuring 39cm square and 30cm tall by prestigious London maker with makers stamp to the lower left section.

Mark Henry Blanchard was an apprentice at the Coade Stone Factory in Lambeth in the firm's latter years, probably when it was managed by Thomas John Croggon between c.1835-37. Blanchard soon after started his own business in Blackfriars Road, Lambeth about 1840 (probably working initially in plaster) and then appears to have acquired some of the Coade Factory's moulds at auction in 1843.

Blanchard established a reputation at highest level of garden and architectural recreation stone work, using a unique Bath stone mixture, still found amongst some of the most desirable examples of such work, such as the V and A museum etc..

A fine quality garden or indoor pedestal base plinth, showing a splendid timeworn patination, believed to be circa 1840-1850, in mostly very good condition, please see images for a very honest account of condition, some surface blistering to 1 side and a surface crack which does not penetrate the structural integrity.

A superbly stylish pedestal for a statue or urn, garden or interior design piece of considerable quality and appeal.

Architectural terracotta is a fired clay material used extensively for ornamentation and structural elements during the nineteenth century, prized for its durability and capacity for crisp detailing.

Pieces were typically hand-pressed into moulds using prepared clay bodies, often incorporating grog to reduce shrinkage, before being fired in large kilns.

Authenticity is generally verified through makers stamps, characteristic weathering patterns, composition analysis of the ceramic body, and traditional moulding seams.

Such pieces function effectively as minimalist display plinths for modern sculpture, or as organic focal points within garden rooms and courtyards.

Maintenance involves gentle cleaning with soft brushes and low-pressure water to remove organic debris while preserving the historic patina and weathering.
