Description

A fine example of a mid 19thc "pocket" screw type nutcracker, made out of fruitwood and oak....it is in very good condition with a superb colour....these collectable little nutcrackers were kept in your pocket, as you went on your country rambles, ready for use when you came across cobb nuts / hazelnuts in the hedgerows and woods....several of these nutcrackers show teeth marks on the handle from previous owners trying to crack nuts by tightening the handle with their teeth, to get extra pressure, but I'm sure it didn't do their teeth any good...!

English. C1840-60. Provenance of the Brian Hawtin collection.

Treen refers to small, functional wooden domestic articles made by hand or on a lathe, which gained immense popularity during the Victorian era for both utility and decorative appeal.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense, durable hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood like apple or pear, and oak to withstand the repeated mechanical pressure required for cracking shells.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patination, tool marks consistent with period turning techniques, hand-cut threads on the screw mechanism, and age-appropriate wear and oxidisation to the timber.

Small treen objects add warmth and historical texture when styled within a collection on a bookshelf, displayed inside a glazed cabinet, or used as a focal point on a coffee table tray.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying a neutral beeswax to nourish the wood, avoiding water immersion, harsh chemical cleaners, and direct sunlight.
