Toleware refers to metalware, typically tin or iron, that has been lacquered or enamelled and hand-painted, gaining popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries across Britain and Europe for functional household objects.

These items are constructed from sheet metal, typically iron or steel, shaped into a tapered cylinder with soldered seams and reinforced rims, then finished with layers of dark paint or japanning and hand-applied motifs.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination, hand-forged or soldered construction marks, genuine wear to the metal and paint layers, and the characteristics of the pigments used in the hand-painted decoration.

They work effectively as decorative floor standing pieces, such as umbrella stands or planters, adding historical texture and a focal point of colour and pattern to traditional or eclectic spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the item in a stable environment away from excessive moisture to prevent rust, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could damage the aged paint surface.
