This Edwardian taxidermy dome is an authentic antique display piece from the early twentieth century, designed for protective preservation in a gentleman's library. The piece consists of a hand-blown clear glass cloche with a smooth rounded dome top, resting securely on a circular plinth with a turned dark brown ebonised wooden base. The timber base exhibits a warm polished finish with distinct grain variations, while the glass reflects light clearly across its curved surface. Measuring 39 cm in height and 16 cm in diameter, the proportions suit placement upon a polished wooden sideboard top or study table to showcase delicate specimens or ornaments. The construction reflects traditional Edwardian display methods, with the glass cover lifting away from the grooved wooden stand for easy access to the interior.

During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, glass display domes, or cloches, were primarily crafted to protect fragile taxidermy, clockwork mechanisms, botanical specimens, and delicate decorative items from dust and atmospheric damage.

Authentic period domes were hand-blown from soda-lime glass, resulting in slight irregularities or air bubbles, and mounted onto turned wooden bases often finished with ebonised paint or mahogany stain.

Original period examples feature thin, mouth-blown glass with subtle imperfections, pontil marks or smoothed rims at the bottom edge, and turned timber bases showing authentic wear and age-related patina.

These glass domes can be styled on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or sideboards to showcase modern art objects, dried botanical arrangements, micro-sculptures, or vintage curiosities.

Clean the glass using a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water or mild glass cleaner, avoiding abrasive chemicals, while dusting the wooden base gently with a dry soft brush.
