Description

An early 20th century English oak easel, circa 1900-1920.

An exquisitely elegant, English oak artist easel of charming design and fine quality, with a tasteful narrow form upon operating castors.

The 230cm tall easel has a long and narrow, anatomical form, superbly well constructed and original, there is no makers label but has a certain Heals look and quality to it.

A fine antique easel model of considerable decorative appeal, a useful and functioning easel with a ratchet system and all original parts, the central bolt needs fixing back into the section that holds the top of the canvas in place, an easy adjustment to make.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Early 20th-century studio easels were predominantly crafted for professional artists and high-end academies, reflecting the Arts and Crafts movements emphasis on utility and honest construction using durable timbers like oak.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid quarter-sawn oak, featuring adjustable ratchet mechanisms, pegged joints, and heavy-footed bases designed to support large canvases securely.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate hardware such as slotted brass screws, traditional joinery, natural patina from historical use, and maker stamps or registration marks from known cabinetmakers.

An antique easel serves as a sophisticated display stand for large-scale contemporary paintings, framed mirrors, or vintage maps, adding vertical interest and an artistic focal point to a room.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber splitting, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically treating the wood with a microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain.
