Toleware refers to metalware, typically iron or tin, that has been lacquered or enamelled and hand-painted. The craft gained significant popularity in Britain and Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries for creating decorative household items.

Antique fire screens typically feature a sheet metal or wrought iron body, shaped and hand-painted with oil-based pigments. They often incorporate a rear stand or folding frame to provide stability when placed in front of a hearth.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-brushed detailing with natural pigment variations, characteristic craquelure in the aged lacquer or paint layers, and signs of hand-forging or cut-sheet metal construction typical of the period.

Such pieces can be positioned as decorative focal points within unused fireplaces, or displayed against neutral walls to highlight their hand-painted floral motifs and textural metal craftsmanship.

Preservation involves keeping the item away from direct heat sources and high moisture. Dusting should be performed gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents that could damage the historic painted finish.
