Description

A wonderful pair of antique mahogany side tables. They were made in England, they date from around the 1910-1920 period.

The quality is excellent, they are extremely well made and are a very useful size. There are nicely shaped lower edges and a small gallery around the top. Each table has a handy lower tier, and they are very sturdy.

We have recently had these re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has acquired a gorgeous patina over the years, there is some minor old wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Mahogany became widely popular in British cabinet making during the 18th century, prized for its deep rich colour, durability, and fine grain which allowed for intricate carving and polished finishes.

Authentic period tables typically utilise solid hardwoods like mahogany or oak, often constructed with traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing, and hand-turned wooden components.

Authenticity is identified through inspection of tool marks, timber shrinkage, oxidisation patterns, uniformity of hand-cut joints, and the presence of period-appropriate secondary woods.

Pairing period wooden pieces with modern neutral palettes, minimalist lighting, and contemporary textiles creates a balanced, layered aesthetic that highlights the warmth of the natural wood.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the finish.
