Antique Georgian Style Mahogany Side Table | Pad Feet

1900 - 1920

Description

Antique Georgian style side table in mahogany, an elegant and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine traditional craftsmanship.

The frieze is fitted with three drawers, a long central drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, each with a moulded front and a pierced brass swan-neck handle in the Chippendale manner. The drawers are lined in oak and run smoothly.

The rectangular top sits above a plain frieze, with traditional pegged joints at the corners and an oak back rail, all raised on four elegant turned tapering legs ending in pad feet.

The mahogany displays a lovely grain and a deep, rich colour with an attractive aged patina to the top.

This Georgian style side table dates from 1920 and takes the form of an English Country House side table made from mahogany and brass. The dark brown timber shows a visible grain and an aged patina across the rectangular top. The frieze contains three drawers, consisting of a long central drawer flanked by two smaller drawers, fitted with pierced brass handles and moulded fronts. The structure stands on four cabriole legs with pad feet. Measuring 70 cm high, 98 cm wide and 48 cm deep, the table fits into traditional interiors beside the front door, or serves as a hall table, writing table or lowboy-style dressing table. It provides a practical surface for everyday use while maintaining a formal appearance suited to a hallway or reception space.

FAQs

Georgian style side tables, produced during the reign of Kings George I through IV (17141830), are characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and functional drawer storage. Common design features include cabriole or tapered legs, pad or claw-and-ball feet, and ornate brass drop handles.

Primary woods during the Georgian period included solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany and walnut, valued for their durability and deep timber grain. Secondary woods used for drawer linings and internal framing typically included pine, oak, or poplar, finished with pierced cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, uneven hand-sawn timber marks on the underside, and natural patination around original brass handles. Secondary lining woods often display slight shrinkage over time, and drawer bottoms usually feature wood grain running front-to-back.

A Georgian side table works well in a contemporary entryway as a console, framed beneath a modern mirror, or situated behind a sofa to display table lamps and ceramics. Its understated silhouette allows it to complement minimalist, traditional, or eclectic decor schemes seamlessly.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, or moist environments to prevent wood warping, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
