John Speed was a renowned English cartographer and historian of the early 17th century, famous for his seminal atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, which featured detailed county maps decorated with town plans, coats of arms, and historical scenes.

These maps were typically printed from copperplate engravings onto handmade rag paper and were frequently hand-coloured using watercolour paints either at the time of publication or later by collectors.

Authentication involves examining the paper watermark, the impression left by the copperplate edges, the quality of the engraving lines, and checking the descriptive text printed on the reverse side of the sheet.

An antique map is traditionally framed with conservation-grade materials and UV-protected glass, allowing it to serve as a sophisticated focal point in a study, library, or hallway.

To prevent fading and degradation, antique maps must be kept away from direct sunlight, displayed away from moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations, and framed using acid-free archival materials.
