A Sutherland table is a narrow, drop-leaf table featuring hinged flaps that fold down on either side, originating in the Victorian era during the mid-19th century and named after the Duchess of Sutherland.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid timber carcases overlaid with decorative veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or satinwood, supported by turned or carved gateleg structures and porcelain or brass castors.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate hand-cut dovetail joints, natural timber ageing, subtle variations in veneer grain patterns, and original hardware such as ceramic castors rather than modern fixings.

This versatile piece functions effectively as a slim console against a wall or expanded as an occasional tea table, pairing well with minimalist modern seating to highlight its rich wood grain.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally nourishing the surface with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
