We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

This complete nineteenth-century Victorian toleware set comprises two covered boxes and two matching trays made in England, finished in a black lacquer with hand-painted floral, bird and butterfly motifs inside gilded scrollwork cartouches and borders. Each piece displays serpentine lobed edges and subtle gilt highlighting along the mouldings, with minor age-related wear visible on the surfaces. The trays measure 25 cm by 21 cm and 22.5 cm by 22.5 cm, while the boxes measure 16 cm by 12.5 cm by 7 cm and 13.5 cm by 13 cm by 6.5 cm. Suitable for placement on a living room sideboard or a dressing table top, this set provides practical storage for small keepsakes alongside decorative display surfaces. The black and gold colour scheme integrates easily into traditional English country house interiors.

English toleware emerged in the late seventeenth century, centred largely around Pontypool and Usk, as an attempt to imitate East Asian lacquerware. Sheet iron was coated with asphaltum-based varnishes and baked to create a durable, jet-black surface suitable for decorative painting.

Traditional toleware was constructed from rolled sheet iron coated with tin, commonly known as tinplate. The decorative surface was achieved using layers of spirit lacquers, oil paint, and gold leaf or bronzing powders.

Authentic period pieces display fine surface craquelure, natural wear to gilding along raised edges, and hand-painted decoration with variable brushstroke depth. The underlying metal often shows age-appropriate oxidisation and slight irregular shaping consistent with hand construction.

Lacquered toleware introduces dark contrast and subtle sheen when styled on timber sideboards, side tables, or bookshelves. Pairing these historic painted surfaces alongside contemporary ceramics or minimalist glassware creates balanced visual texture.

Dust surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or pony hair brush. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or abrasive polishes, as moisture can penetrate hairline cracks in the lacquer and lift the underlying paint or metal.
