FAQs

The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George from 1714 to 1830, characterised by a transition from heavy, dark woods to more refined proportions, classical symmetry, and the introduction of distinct regional cabinet-making techniques.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised native hardwoods such as oak for structural framing, elm for table tops due to its interlocking grain resistance to splitting, and occasionally walnut or mahogany in higher-status pieces.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer linings, hand-planed surfaces with tool marks, traditional timber shrinkage, and original or period-replacement brass hardware.

Pairing historical timber pieces with modern minimalist seating or minimalist abstract art creates a balanced, layered aesthetic that highlights the natural grain and age of the wood without overwhelming the space.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically nourish the timber with traditional beeswax while avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
