This early Victorian games table dates to circa 1840 and exhibits a Victorian and Gothic style. Made from walnut and rosewood, the medium brown piece incorporates a single drawer with a small turned wooden knob, an inlaid chess and backgammon foldover flap, and intricately designed pierced scrollwork trestle legs. Additional details visible include a barley twist stretcher, decorative finials, and shaped block feet. The solid English furniture stands 74 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. In a modern home, this table works well placed in an empty corner as a distinctive accent or used for traditional board games. The robust construction provides a sturdy surface, while the rich timber grain and detailed carving suit period interiors and traditional living spaces alike.

FAQs

Produced during the mid-19th century, early Victorian games tables typically combine decorative craftsmanship with functional utility, featuring reversible or lift-off tops that conceal internal boards for chess, backgammon, or cribbage.

Cabinetmakers during this period predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often employing dovetail drawer joinery, turned stretchers, and hand-carved trestle supports.

Authentic mid-19th-century pieces feature hand-carved fretwork, original brass hardware or wooden drawer pulls, natural age-related oxidisation in drawer linings, and hand-cut joinery.

Position the piece as an occasional side table or accent table in a living space, reading nook, or study, pairing its rich wood tones with neutral contemporary upholstery.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture.
