Antique Victorian Inlaid Walnut Chess Table

19th century
Description

A superb antique Victorian inlaid walnut chess table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880’s period.

It is beautifully made predominantly from walnut, the top has an inlaid chessboard made from sycamore and walnut, with fine walnut cross banding on the outer edges. This sits on a beautifully turned base that rests on tripod legs. The quality is amazing, this is a very practical and fun item. There is a drawer on either side, they contain what appears to be original or at least very old draughts pieces, albeit not complete sets.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the nineteenth century, these small occasional tables featured decorative marquetry chessboards integrated into the tabletop for parlour entertainment.

Craftsmen typically utilised burr or figured walnut, rosewood, and contrasting timber inlays such as boxwood or holly to form the chequered gaming surface.

Authentic pieces often showcase hand-cut timber joinery, turned central pedestals with tripod legs, and fine marquetry or stringing surrounding the chessboard.

Place the table near an armchair or within a window nook, accessorised with period brass or carved wood chess pieces to create a functional focal point.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or fading.
