Description

Very fine quality early 19th century mahogany antique chess and cards table made by Gillows of Lancaster and London. The chess board is a very welcome addition to the normal card table format and this table also has a useful drawer instead of the usual cavity that would have been accessed by the offset swivel. The legs are the classic Gillows design from the pattern book, the drawer lining is made of mahogany, the casters are Cope's and the timber and construction are second to none as one would expect from Gillow. This table was bought by the previous owner from renowned antique shop Quiet Street Antiques in Bath for £3250 and the shop ticket from that purchase is included in this sale.

English circa 1825.

Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1820, is characterised by classical proportions, inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, often featuring fine mahogany, rosewood, and restrained brass ornamentation.

Cabinetmakers of this era predominantly used dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood, often accented with hand-turned details and inlaid veneers for the playing surfaces.

Authentication relies on examining timber patination, traditional joinery methods such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary woods used in linings, and occasionally makers stamps or paper labels.

Such a piece serves as an exceptional focal point in a study or living room, pairing well with contemporary minimalist seating to create a striking contrast between old and new.

Maintain timber furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treat it periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood and preserve its natural lustre.
