Regency Tripod Tilt Top Table for Lamps Etc

19th century
Description

We are pleased to offer this mahogany table which was made around 1790 and retains all its original components.

We haven't had any work done to this table apart from polishing the top as the colour and patina are simply superb.

The tilt top moves easily and catches securely.

The table is useful for many functions. It can be a side table for displaying photos or ornaments, it could be used as an occasional small dining table or as a wine table...it is versatile.

I cannot express enough how pleased I am with this table. It has been around for over 230 years and has sustained no damage. Remarkable!

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Cast brass snap catch with slotted screws: early nineteenth-century table hardware.
Downswept tripod legs with ring-turned column: late George III to Regency design.
Underside shows dark, naturally oxidised timber: undisturbed age beneath the top.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Regency side and occasional table is made from mahogany with a warm brown colour and a polished finish. Dating from around 1790, the piece features a square top with rounded corners, a tilt-top mechanism, a turned pedestal column, and three splayed, down-swept tripod legs. The wood displays natural grain variations, soft surface wear, and a rich patina developed over centuries of use, while all original components remain intact and the mechanism functions securely. The table measures 74 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 69 cm deep. This versatile item finds a practical home at the end of a sofa, serving as a side table for lamps, photographs, or ornaments, or functioning as a wine table or an occasional small dining table in a living room or study.

A Regency tripod tilt-top table is an early 19th-century occasional table featuring a central turned column supported by three splayed legs and a hinged top that folds vertically to save space when not in use.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring hand-turned central pedestals and brass tilt catch mechanisms.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-cut brass latch mechanisms, original wooden pivot block construction beneath the tabletop, down-swept tripod legs, and natural wood shrinkage consistent with age.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa as a functional lamp stand, or tilt the tabletop upright in a hallway or alcove to showcase the timber grain when floor space is limited.

Keep the wood protected by applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and keep away from direct heat sources to prevent moisture loss.
