Kashmiri papier-mache, locally known as Kar-i-Qalamdan, is a traditional handicraft that involves moulding paper pulp into decorative objects and intricately painting them with natural pigments and gold leaf, a technique popularized during the Mughal era and continued through the British colonial period.

Authentic pieces are crafted from compressed paper pulp or layers of paper reinforced with adhesive, coated with a plaster base, smoothed, painted by hand with intricate miniature floral motifs, and finished with a protective varnish or lacquer.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-mixed natural pigments, fine brushwork showing slight individual variations, traditional motifs such as chinar leaves or floral sprays, and signs of age-appropriate wear to the lacquer surface, such as fine craquelure.

This piece works effectively as a standalone decorative focal point on a flat surface like a console table or sideboard, contrasting cleanly against neutral or dark architectural backgrounds to highlight its intricate patterns.

Maintain the item by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, high humidity, and moisture, as water can damage the papier-mache substrate and lift the painted lacquer finish.
