Kashmiri papier mache, known locally as kar-i-qalamdani, is a traditional handicraft originating in Kashmir, involving the moulding of paper pulp or layered paper sheets into decorative objects which are then meticulously hand-painted and lacquered.

These items are traditionally constructed from compressed paper pulp or layered paper waste, reinforced with natural glues, and finished with multiple coats of varnish or lacquer over intricate mineral and vegetable pigment paintings.

Authentic antique pieces typically exhibit fine, hand-painted detailing using traditional natural pigments, noticeable wear consistent with age, traditional wooden or paper turning cores, and an aged patina beneath the protective lacquer.

Small antique vessels add historical depth and tactile contrast when displayed on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or coffee tables, often styled alongside modern ceramics or stacked books to create layered vignettes.

To preserve antique lacquerware, keep items out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, avoid exposure to excessive moisture or humidity, and dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without using chemical cleaners.
