FAQs

Staffordshire spaniel figures were widely produced in the pottery towns of Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century. They became immensely popular as mantelpiece ornaments in Victorian households, frequently modelled after Queen Victorias own pet King Charles Spaniels.

These figures are typically crafted from earthenware clay, hand-painted with ceramic pigments, and often glazed with a clear lead glaze. Many feature gilt highlights or copper lustre details applied over the glaze and fired a second time.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit fine crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside or back for firing, hand-painted facial features with minor variations between pairs, and weight indicative of dense Victorian earthenware rather than modern lightweight resin or porcelain.

These ceramic dogs are traditionally displayed symmetrically on a mantelpiece, but can also be arranged on a bookshelf, console table, or sideboard to introduce classic British character and eclectic charm to modern living spaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using chemical cleaning agents or submerging the pieces in water, particularly if they feature overglaze gilding or painted details that can flake over time.
