A matched pair of Victorian Staffordshire earthenware spaniel figurines, dating from 1860, capture the quintessential style of English country house mantel dogs. Each ceramic dog displays a high-gloss glaze finish in cream with hand-painted russet patches, complemented by black enamel details on the facial features and chains. The press-moulded figures exhibit feathered fur texturing, painted gilt collars with padlocks, and distinctive painted chains drooping across the chest. Each spaniel measures 25 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Visible details include aged craquelure, minor paint wear, and small glaze imperfections across the earthenware surfaces. The figurines sit upright on flat bases, displaying expressive painted eyes and snout markings. These decorative ornaments suit display on a mantelpiece or shelf within a traditional living space. The pair presents a symmetrical design suitable for tabletop or display cabinet arrangement.

Staffordshire spaniel figurines are decorative earthenware ornaments originally produced in the Staffordshire pottery district of England during the nineteenth century. Commonly referred to as mantel dogs or wally dugs, they were traditionally displayed in symmetrical pairs on fireplace mantels in Victorian homes.

These figures were typically press-moulded in two separate plaster halves using earthenware clay, joined together, and fired before receiving a white lead glaze. Artisans then applied hand-painted enamel details, such as russet or black spots, facial features, and gilt or black lustre collars and chains.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples generally display press-moulding seams, a small release hole on the bottom or back to allow steam to escape during firing, and age-appropriate crazing in the glaze. Hand-painted variations in colour density and paint alignment are also characteristic of period pieces.

A pair of ceramic spaniels can be styled symmetrically on a fireplace mantel, a console table, or arranged within a bookcase to add historical character. They integrate well into classic traditional schemes, eclectic displays, and country house interiors.

Dust figures regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean camel-hair brush to prevent dirt accumulation in moulded crevices. Avoid submerging the ceramics in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as water can enter internal release holes and degrade fragile overglaze paint or gilt detailing.
