This 19th Century pair of decorative figurines takes the form of Victorian Staffordshire dogs, specifically portraying the famous curls of Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister. The earthenware pieces show a white glazed surface decorated with hand-painted black patches, yellow eyes, and gilded chain collars with padlocks, alongside moulded fur texture and topknot curls. The animals sit in mirrored poses with separate front legs, smooth white paws, and upright posture on a polished wooden surface. Each figure measures 25 x 20 x 10 cm. Such ornamental ceramics suit placement on a mantelpiece within an English Country House interior scheme, adding traditional character to a living room, study, or hallway display. The pair works well as a decorative focal point upon a shelf, sideboard, or mantel, bringing historical Staffordshire style to contemporary domestic spaces.

Staffordshire dogs, also known as hearth dogs or chimney dogs, are earthenware figures of seated spaniels produced in Staffordshire potteries during the nineteenth century, intended for display in pairs on mantelpieces.

These figurines were created from press-moulded earthenware, finished with a white lead glaze, and painted by hand using enamel colours and gold leaf accents for collars and chains.

Authentic period examples exhibit press-moulded construction with release holes at the base or reverse, light glaze crazing, hand-applied painted details, and age-consistent wear to foot rims and gilding.

Position the pair symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, side table, or open bookshelf to provide balanced structure and add classical historical character to contemporary rooms.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfiber brush, avoid soaking in water or using chemical detergents, and keep away from moisture to safeguard original enamel decoration and gilding.
