FAQs

Folding screens originated in ancient China and were later imported to Europe via trade routes during the 17th and 18th centuries, where French artisans began crafting ornate versions for aristocratic boudoirs and dressing rooms to provide privacy and block draughts.

These screens typically feature a lightweight wooden frame carved from softwood or hardwood, coated in a layer of gesso, and meticulously gilded with leaf. Panels were frequently inset with upholstered fabrics, hand-painted canvases, or decorative paper.

Authenticity is determined by examining the joinery, such as hand-cut hinges and traditional peg construction, alongside the natural ageing of the gilt finish, canvas degradation, and the use of period-appropriate textiles.

An antique screen serves as a functional statement piece that can zone open-plan living areas, conceal utilitarian corners, or act as a striking backdrop behind a bed or seating arrangement to add textural depth.

Giltwood frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid abrasion, while upholstered fabric panels should be professionally cleaned or lightly vacuumed with a low-suction brush attachment to protect delicate threads.
