This pair of 19th-century architectural salvage wall sconces comprises carved wood capitals in the Corinthian style, converted from original columns. The pieces display a distressed gold finish over timber with visible traces of green paint and weathered surfaces, complemented by metal candle inserts fixed to the top flat platforms. Detailed ornamentation includes scrolling volutes, acanthus leaves, fluted detailing, and floral carving across the frieze, resting upon a series of moulded bead details along the lower edge. Measuring 18.5 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 19.8 cm deep, these neoclassically inspired items suit placement on either side of a fireplace, mirror, or console table in a grand interior setting.

The Corinthian order originated in ancient Greece during the late 5th century BC and became the most ornate of the classical architectural orders. Characterised by intricate acanthus leaves and scrolling volutes, Corinthian capitals were extensively used throughout Roman architecture and later revived during the Renaissance and Neoclassical eras.

Architectural capitals were traditionally hand-carved from solid hardwoods such as oak, pine, or walnut, or carved from stone. Wood capitals often featured layered gesso undercoats finished with gold leaf gilding or polychrome paint treatments to highlight the detailed relief work.

Authentic period pieces display distinct hand-carving marks, natural wood shrinkage, and uneven wear to raised relief surfaces. Original finish layers typically show craquelure, paint flaking, or oxidisation on gilded areas, alongside historic mounting points or structural joints on the reverse side.

Carved capitals can be mounted as architectural wall brackets, incorporated into bespoke shelving, or positioned symmetrically on a sideboard or mantelpiece. Their sculptural quality provides texture and historical depth when contrasted against clean, contemporary backdrop walls.

Dust gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush to avoid dislodging delicate gilding or flaking paint layers. Keep items away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber warping or cracking, and avoid chemical solvents or damp cloths.
