Large George Jones Majolica Jardiniere C1880

19th century
Description

This fabulous VICTORIAN MAJOLICA JARDINIERE stands on three feet and is decorated with Humming Birds and Jasmine on a Cobalt Blue ground. It was made by GEORGE JONES around 1880 and bears his impressed marks and the painted pattern number 3250.

The Jardiniere displays beautifully. There are cracks to the base and it would need a water-tight container inside if used for plants. There is no restoration.

The striking contrast of the colours, the depth of the relief moulding and the juxtaposition of the Humming Birds and Jasmine make this Jardiniere a fine example of English Victorian Majolica.

This Victorian George Jones majolica jardiniere, dating from around 1880, consists of earthenware with a vibrant cobalt blue ground and a contrasting turquoise glazed interior. The cylindrical body stands on three leaf-shaped feet and exhibits vertical white moulding around the rim and base. Relief-moulded jasmine floral trails and humming birds wind across the exterior in white and pale green tones. The exterior shows cracks to the base, and the interior requires a watertight container if used for live planting. Measuring 29.5 cm high by 28.5 cm wide and 28.5 cm deep, this piece makes a decorative display item for a sideboard top in a sunlit conservatory, hallway, or living room setting. The design incorporates impressed maker marks alongside a painted pattern number on the underside, with no signs of prior restoration.

Victorian majolica is a type of lead-glazed earthenware introduced in the mid-19th century, characterized by vibrant coloured glazes and relief-moulded designs depicting naturalistic themes.

Majolica pieces were produced by pressing clay into plaster moulds to create detailed three-dimensional patterns, after which clear and coloured lead glazes were applied before firing.

Authentic George Jones majolica often features impressed makers marks, a monogram, or registration marks on the base, as well as a signature turquoise or pink glaze lining on the interior.

A majolica jardiniere can be placed on a console table, sideboard, or deep window sill, styled either empty as a standalone art piece or filled with orchids or leafy greenery.

Clean majolica gently using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, soaking, or exposure to high temperatures to preserve the lead glaze and prevent crazing.
