Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of 19th-century neoclassical architectural columns brings grand Regency style to interior or exterior settings as a porch feature or garden display. Fashioned from softwood with an off-white painted finish, each tall upright features a cylindrical tapered shaft rising from a square plinth base to a moulded capital. The weathered surfaces show visible signs of age including surface wear, splits, and losses, displaying the character of architectural salvage that requires restoration. Standing 241 cm high and 26 cm wide, these sizeable salvage pieces suit placement in an entranceway or portico. Suitable for period home renovations, these columns create a striking structural focal point in a hallway, porch, or garden landscaping project. The classic proportions and distressed painted finish integrate well with traditional architectural restoration schemes.

FAQs

Portico columns originate from classical Greek and Roman architecture, where they were utilised to support a covered entrance or porch. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Neoclassical, Georgian, and Regency builders adapted these classical forms using native hardwoods and softwoods for residential porticos and entrances.

While classical exterior columns were frequently carved from stone or marble, domestic and interior columns were often constructed from timber such as pine, fir, or oak. Timber columns were typically turned on large lathes, hollowed to prevent splitting, and finished with protective paint layers.

Original timber columns display evidence of historic hand-planing, lathe marks, square-cut iron nails, or wooden peg joinery. Multiple aged layers of paint, natural wood shrinkage along the grain, and historical weather wear at the plinth base also indicate age.

Architectural columns can be installed to frame internal doorways, delineate open-plan living spaces, or serve as vertical features in high-ceilinged rooms. They are also mounted on heavy bases to act as freestanding decorative sculptures or plant stands.

Stabilisation involves treating dry rot or woodworm infestation with targeted conservation solutions and ensuring the timber is stored in a dry, ventilated environment. Flaking paint should be consolidated rather than stripped if preserving original surface patina is required.
