FAQs

Wall pockets and candle boxes were traditionally hung in hallways, kitchens, or bedrooms during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold tallow or beeswax candles, matches, letters, or small everyday items.

They were typically handcrafted from native or colonial hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring dovetail joints, shaped crests, and a drilled aperture at the top for wall hanging.

Authenticity is determined by assessing timber grain, natural patina, hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate fixings, and signs of genuine age-related wear and oxidisation.

These versatile pieces can be mounted in an entryway to hold keys and mail, or used in a living space to display dried botanicals, small rolled textiles, or taper candles.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the surface.
